Is Okonkwo's death honorable?

  1. When Okonkwo kills himself he is being dishonorable, Obierka says, " 'That man was one of the greatest men in Umuofia. You drove him to kill himself; and now he will be buried like a dog . . .' " (208). The people of the village of Umuofia are deeply saddened and disappointed that Okonkwo kills himself because they respected him and now he is not worthy of respect because of the way he decided to die. Obviously he is not respected by all those that live in his culture. I, however, find that his death honorable because Okonkwo died fighting for what he believed in. He chose to show people that he will not change or go under the rule of missionaries, and his death somehow sencs a message that it would be bad if they did as well. He died an honost man, with a different point of view that he did not want to be forced to change.
