Is Emma affected more byt her physical surroundings or the people who surround her? That is, was she happier at home with her father because of his company or the comfort of her original home? Is Emma worse of before she begins the affair with Rodolphe or after, when he leaves her? What do you think makes Emma long for her daughter every once in a while and not all the time the way most mothers do?
I think Emma is worse off after Rodolphe leaves her, and not only because of her illness. Before their relationship developed, she was in despair because of her situation, but she did not quite know what she was missing until she found comfort in another man. Emma's sandess is obviously deepened by her feeling of loneliness thereafter, and she has a difficult time learning how to cope without Rodolphe by her side and without the crutch that her husband could have provided. At times, I feel bad for Emma because she is stuck in a marriage in a time when divorce was not a possibility, but then I feel differently because she is the one who brings herself into these situations.
To answer your first question, I think Emma is more affected by the people around her. Emma doesn't appear to be a very dominant person and overall is very incapable of finding her own way. Instead, she relies on those around her to help her be happy and be occupied. When she is happy with the person she is with, whether that's her father, Charles, or Leaon, her personality changes. Also, the lack of these people also has a great affect on her. I think location is just an association of that link between Emma and the people around her, because she associates the location with her current state of mind.
Does Charles's Love for Emma blind him for noticing the affairs?
Is Emma ready for a relationship? In the romantic novels usually there is only one man and not many. Is she ready for that life style?
Will Emma ever find the man of her dreams? I don' think Emma will find that perfect guy. She meets Rudolphe and it seem good for awhile, but Rudolphe is not happy. Leon is away, but comes back and Emma is wary of giving him another chance. Charles is not sophisicated enough for her lifestyle. She seems to keep distancing herself from her dream in away. I don't think there is a perfect mam for her and she needs to be happy with Charles, who provides her a good life.
Does Emma actually love Rodolphe, or does she like the idea of anyone but Charles? That is to say, does she only have feelings for him because he is someone different?
Will Emma ever truly find happiness?
Who is the best man for Emma out of the characters we have seen?
I do not think Emma will ever truly find happiness. She is always longing for more. Her major problem is with envy. If she sees something that is better than her life, she wants it. This is a cycle that will never rest. For example, if she had been living a similar life to one of the women at the ball, she would have been envious of a woman who had something better. Unless she learns to appreciate what she has, Emma will never know true happiness.
Could Charles have done anything differently to maintain Emma's affection and attention?
Will Emma continue to bounce around in "relationships" or one day finally be content with her life?
If Emma was your daughter would you be critical of her choices or supportive or her search for happiness?
If I was Emma's father I would face a unique challenge. I would definitely want Emma to pursue happiness and not settle for less than she is worth but she would need to understand she may not become rich and famous and have a perfect life. I would try and instill an appreciation in Emma so she can understand her life is not as miserable as she sees it. I would encourage her to seek what she desires in life while understanding she may never fully achieve it.
1) I think the only way that Charles may have been able keep Emma's affection is if he had not taken her to the ball. It seems that her search for luxury stemmed from this point. If this could have been avoided she may have not been in a constant search for the love and lust of high class life. This may have allowed them to stay in their original home as well. He could have also been more confrontational with her about it and try to make her realize she lives a fine life.
1.) I think Charles got stuck with whiny baby who is ungrateful for anything she has. I dont think there is anything he could do that would help the situation. I think the connection between love and marriage are different during these times. Personally I think if you love someone it is expected in society that you get married but you don't need to. But the person you married back then was the one you could get with the highest social ranking.
Why is Emma reluctant to go see Leon at the church?
How do Emma and Rodolphe view their relationship differently?
How would/will Charles react if/when he finds out about Emma's affair?
Who is the best man for Emma out of the characters we have seen? I think the best man for Emma is Leon. The two get along well from the time they meet and share a love for books. They have a lot to talk about andare passionate about similar things. Leon isn't as open with his feelings at first because he cares so much about Emma. Eventually, he tells her he loves her, and she kind of turns him down. Rodolphe, on the other hand, has had many relationships, and Emma is just another woman he will stay with until he gets tired of her.
1) I believe that Emma's discontent stems from within herself. Charles is a regular man, providing his wife with what he can, loving her, and caring for her. She is displeased with Charles' ability to show that love, that we cannot doubt; but to look at the broader picture, is she content with anything? She dreams about lives she cannot live, and envies people who have what she doesn't. An envious women like Emma can never be satisfied with what she has until she is grateful for what she has. She is living in a fantasy, which is extremely impractical in reality. To advance to your second question, I believe Charles is not blind, but tends to be in his own mindset, disregarding Emma's fantasies. He cares for her, but if her happiness comes from affairs, then why should he interfere with them. He wants her to be comfortable, but at the same token doesn't want to be a part of her misery. Charles is focused on his work and his life too much to even begin to imagine Emma's misery. He is humble, unlike his wife, and therefore both cannot get along without Emma's side-affairs.
Why does Emma not show interest in Leon once she discovered he loves her?
Is Charles oblivious to Emma's actions or does he not want to believe it?
What is Emma looking for?
To answer Bronte's first question, I don't think Charles could do anything that would please Emma. Emma is constantly looking for a new experience/lifestyle. We can see that love is not necessarily what she is looking for because she becomes uninterested in Leon when she finds out that he loves her. Money also wouldn't make her happy, because even if Charles was richer I don't think her opinions of him would change.
If Emma is so unhappy with Charles, why doesn't she just leave him? She already is ok with cheating on him, why not be fair to him and let him know what's going on? Also, does she view the child as an extension of Charles, and not as herself?
What makes Emma truly happy? Who will be better for Emma? What is the similarity between Don Quixote and Madame Bovary Both characters are live in imaginary world. Therefore, both characters die if they realize the reality because the imaginary world was their truth. Their life show us the meaningful decision that human made: how much human being wanted to live in imaginary world in real life?
I think Emma's mentality was basically that she wanted a fairy tail to come true for her; passion and love like she read in books. However, I believe she was in the mentality of wanting to escape from another misery, only leading herself to another one. Therefore, she was obviously looking forward to falling in love with him because she thought he can help her achieve her fantasies.
Does Emma know what she want? To what extent does Emma controls her life? Was Emma truly looking for a man who can exert power and control on her, if so, why Emma initially resisted Rodolphe's initiative?
Would Emma have gone through with running away with Rudolphe?
I think Emma knew deep down that she couldn't leave Charles. She spoke to Rudolphe about bringing her child with her. As much as she wants to run away with him, she does have reservations. She knows that if she were to run away that she would eventually suffer from the same idleness that drew her to have an affair. Emma's disenchantment with Charles is what makes her affairs more romantic and satisfying.
